For 19 years Starr Foster Dance has produced the Mid Atlantic Choreographers Showcase, supporting new and recent works created by more than 175 choreographers.
We are seeking works that embrace LGBTQIA+ themes; such as concepts regarding (but certainly not limited to) gender, sex, and sexuality. Staying true to our mission, we accept new as well as existing work.
Applications are reviewed by a panel of adjudicators from the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Please feel free to contact us here if you have any questions.
WHAT DO THE ARTISTS RECEIVE?
The Choreographers’ Showcase is fully produced by Starr Foster Dance, and is responsible for all costs of producing the concert including theater rental, lighting design, technical support, and all publicity and press. The venue is a 130 seat house with a 28ft x24ft stage. It is a proscenium theatre, but feels like a black box, with no wings or crossover. The Showcase choreographers will receive professional documentation of all three performances and an honorarium. Participating artists are responsible for any costs for food, lodging, travel, and dancer compensation. We will assist those who are traveling to Richmond from out of town with information about the area and local airbnb’s and hotels. We have a few host families that are happy to provide housing for choreographers that have transportation.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Showcase supports new and existing dance works that are at least 5 minutes and do not exceed 12 minutes. Those wishing to submit a new work must provide a video example of a previous, completed dance work or a video of the work in progress. All works must be completed by March 22nd, 2024 for program order, lighting and technical needs. The Choreographers' Showcase is a professional concert and applicants and performers must be at least 18 years of age. Works that include high school students will not be considered.
Technical rehearsals will take place in the evening on Friday, June 7th and the morning of Saturday, June 8th. Saturday technical rehearsals are generally reserved for those traveling from out of town.
The Showcase participants are responsible for meeting all deadlines for lighting, spacing and tech, as well as press and program needs. If these needs are not met, SFD has the right to pull the work from the concert.
If you have been produced in the Showcase before, we encourage you to do again.
